Simple, quick, fun and the added assist mode for those that maybe don't have that much pacience make the game a really good experience. Maybe a bit too short and too expensive for what it is but great game no matter what.. Absolutely fell in love as soon as I saw this on E3 haha. The mechanics are easy and fun. Love the fear and thrill trying to get through the game w/o dying lol.As a fan of horror and pixels this definitely takes the cake. I hope there's more like this genre.Kudos!. This game is for a very particular audience of players and is by no means perfect, but I enjoyed it a lot. The concept of "enemies get power up, you don't" is amazing and with every boss defeated the game world itself becomes more treacherous and dangerous (the enemy placement is always randomized). Also, subsequent bosses will be more erratic, with your characters hallucinating more often, which leads to the bosses teleporting and to all kinds of little tricks to unnerve you. Overall, you have to plan your route by considering the difficulty of the bosses, the difficulty of how to get to the bosses and the powerup that your next target will give to the Hive. Every route has pros and cons and you have to plan the most efficient way for you to make it out alive. The controls are responsive and satisfying but most of all, the atmosphere is amazing. It's scary, extremely tense and the great sound design contributes to making the player feel uncomfortable. Yes, even the LAST CHANCE sound is a perfect fit, but can be turned off if you find it so annoying. Getting to the last remaining bosses while nowhere is safe anymore, vicious enemies pop out of every corner and you are killed again and again until your last life is an incredibly draining experience, but in a good way. Completing the game without assist mode feels like a titanic accomplishment (I suggest not turning that on, since the games loses its very purpose and 99% of its longevity, since it's a very short game and if you set unlimited lives it will last very little). The game has big fariness issues at times, though. The camera does not accurately follow you 100% of the time, and seems to be anchored to specific "zones". When you exit these zones, the camera follows you with a delay and that can cause you to run into some scorpion or flying enemy you coulnd't even see. This problem is minor if you play the game slowly and carefully, but sometimes you just want to blaze through an area you already did a lot of times. The issue is particularly evident when you are at 4 crystals (more enemies all around and no safe zones) and at 5 crystals (I won't spoil it but you'll have to move lighting fast and colliding with things you couldn't even see is very unfair in that very tense situation). Also, the Kraken boss moves its tentacles in such a way that they become impossible to dodge in certain situations. Once, I had a spider dropping onto me THROUGH A SOLID PLATFORM, making me lose a life in a pivotal moment. That is not fair at all.So I can't really recommend Overwhelm at full price, because it can be an incredibly frustrating experience at times. But this discounted price is perfect, especially if you like ungodly challenge and a constant sensation of tension and discomfort. When everything clicks, Overwhelm is a little masterpiece, so you should really try it.. Leaves you overwhelmed. Pretty much no replayability, other than that its a great game. Good stuff.. I was led to believe that this was a action horror game with random elements, but some of these elements, like foliage that obscures one shot enemies, make it more akin to a trial and error kaizo map.. I've only spent an hour with OVERWHELM so far but it's been a heck of an hour.Getting out of the way early: This game is not long. I only have one hour logged and I've managed to kill 4 of the (presumably) 5 bosses. The map isn't particularly big and I imagine most people will be able to beat it before hitting the two hour mark.Let's talk about what this game does well, though: Atmosphere and tension. The map isn't big, but enemies are randomly positioned on every playthrough. You die in one hit, and you only have 3 lives, so you can't just comfortably zerg your way to a boss chamber and clear it. Part of the appeal of the game is that with every boss you defeat, the enemies in the rest of the game will get empowered in some way. You won't ever really feel comfortable, is what I'm saying. The game knows how to ratchet tension up. The game will pretty liberally checkpoint you in the event you do die, but each respawn brings a bit of additional issue. Your UI will begin to fog around the edges, blocking your view of how much ammunition you have. Ammo is only refilled in boss chambers and back at the central hub, so every shot counts. On top of that, your gun will begin to tick alarms when your ammo total is depleting. It's unnerving to say the least.$8 might be a bit much for a game this brief, but there's certainly something to be said about what it offers. If you're looking for a retro-styled shooter that will raise your blood pressure between every round, you can certainly do worse.THE EDIT:I finally finished the game, with 2.5 hours logged according to Steam. A couple of asterisks there, though.- The game's random nonsense gets a lot worse at the end of the game.- The game's "Assist Mode" is pretty excellent: You are not penalized for using it beyond the knowledge that you had to use it.- There is a segment near the end that can require you to die multiple times, which makes it nearly impossible without assist modeI threw in the towel after getting cheesed to death when I was 4/5 crystals and making my way to the final boss; An enemy with a specfic attack appeared as a specific location and it was practically impossible for me to protect myself. Vague, I know, but I don't want to reveal a lot.Let me be clear: There is nothing wrong with turning on Infinite Lives when you finally break down. You can still complete the game and as far as I'm aware, there's no difference in the final sequences. Considering you can turn on or turn off Assist Mode at any point in your game without resetting or restarting, I'm halfly confident in figuring there's no change in the end.Overall, I enjoyed this game. I haven't stepped back in since finished but I feel again fairly confident that there isn't much to return to: The map is cleared, the enemies are dead. If there's anything post-game I'll update this review again to mention it.Summary: Satisfying experience tempered by last-moment bullcrap. Maybe worth your money if you like the experience, but I imagine most will play, enjoy, then uninstall.. This game is stressful as all hell, in a good way. It's difficult and uncompromising in a way where you can feel yourself improving in real time with every run. It's not a big game, only an hour in or so I have 3 gems, and I don't think it will be too long before I get the rest, but the combination of twitchy movement, punchy weapons and ever increasing threat make this an addictive little blaster. The sound design is fantastic, and the limited colour palette is actually a strength when it's used as a mechanic in particular boss fights.9 giant commando spiders out of 10
